According to CNN, officials in an Indian state were surprised to receive 2.3 million job applications for 368 job positions. 2.3 million is equivalent to 1% of the population of Uttar Pradesh, a state in North India.
According to Indian media, if all the applicants were to be interviewed, the hiring process would take up to… 4 years.
Alok Chaurasia, an electronics and communication engineering graduate who also applied for the position, said that having a job is better than being unemployed. “There are no jobs anywhere. When I saw the job posting, I immediately applied,” he told NDTV.
The labor market in the Asian country receives up to 1 million new workers every month. This incident shows the demand for manual labor jobs in India, the not-so-positive context of the labor market in this country, and emphasizes the dependence of millions of Indians on government jobs.
In India, having a government job will provide the worker with a relatively high salary, financial security during retirement, and many other benefits. In addition, thanks to current laws, the employment contract they sign can last a lifetime. This is a very good combination for many Indians.
Not long ago, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to create more jobs, especially in the manufacturing sector.
Experts from Societe Generale Bank say that Prime Minister Modi’s goal of creating 100 million new jobs by 2022 is “impossible”. The second most populous country in the world still needs labor law reforms, simplified tax codes, and when it comes to legal reform, it’s a very time-consuming process.
